Ranzau School is a state contributing school situated in a wonderful rural setting, just 3 km from Richmond and 18 km from Nelson.
Our school is well supported by the local community and we always strive to develop strong relationships. We currently have an enthusiastic Parent ‘Connect’ Group and Board of Trustees. We have a committed and hard working teaching and support staff who share the vision and values of the school and community. They participate actively and willingly in all aspects of school life.
Students achieve well at Ranzau School. We place strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, producing results consistently above the national norms. We also place high emphasis in developing inquiring learners who are responsible community members – children who are balanced, self managing, self disciplined, confident, caring, inquiring and who display a love of learning. We have strong student leadership opportunities. Our students care for each other which is visible in our highly successful buddy system and the pride they show in their school.
Ranzau children excel in Sports and The Arts. We believe it is important to give children as many opportunities as we can to be active and creative and to participate in these disciplines. We currently have a kapa haka group and the community always looks forward to the biannual school production. Ranzau is always well represented at interschool sporting fixtures.
Our facilities are well maintained and resource development is always ongoing and aims to ensure the enhancement of our learning environment. We have upgraded all our classrooms into wonderful modern learning spaces. These spaces enable us to deliver a broad and rich curriculum.
Ranzau School has a long history, being one of New Zealand’s oldest schools. Its origins are centred around an early German settlement in the 1840’s and the school has been in continuous existence ever since.

Kia Ora Ranzau Whanau,
Health New Zealand has provided us with some information to share with our school community.
There is an escalating risk of measles, following confirmation of 17 new cases of measles since 20 October. This escalating risk is a concern, especially for education settings where measles can spread rapidly.
Measles is highly contagious and serious – about one in three people may need hospital care. It spreads when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes.
There is now measles in Northland, Auckland, Manawatu, Nelson and Wellington, and further cases are expected across New Zealand.
- Watch out for symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash:
https://info.health.nz/conditions-treatments/infectious-diseases/about-measles/measles#symptoms-of-measles-25
- Anyone with measles symptoms must stay at home and should seek urgent advice by ringing their doctor or Healthline on 0800 611 116.
- Anyone who is closely exposed to a measles case must stay at home. Health New Zealand will provide individuals with advice on a case-by-case basis (including when they can leave quarantine at home).
- Health New Zealand is actively working with the schools that currently have measles cases.
- You are considered immune to measles after having two doses of a measles vaccine from 12 months or older, or if you have had measles before. For more information on measles immunity visit:
https://info.health.nz/conditions-treatments/infectious-diseases/about-measles/measles-immunity
- You are encouraged to check your own and your child/children’s immunisation status through My Health Record: https://my.health.nz/ If you have not already provided the school with evidence of your child’s immunisation, please do so as soon as possible by emailing office@ranzau.school.nz
- Anyone born between 1969 and 2004 may have only received one vaccine dose and might not be fully protected. It’s safe to get extra doses. A free vaccine can be booked online or via the Vaccination Helpline on 0800 28 29 26 https://app.bookmyvaccine.health.nz/
