Ranzau School is a state contributing school situated in a wonderful rural setting, just 3 km from Richmond and 18 km from Nelson.
Our school is well supported by the local community and we always strive to develop strong relationships. We currently have an enthusiastic Parent ‘Connect’ Group and Board of Trustees. We have a committed and hard working teaching and support staff who share the vision and values of the school and community. They participate actively and willingly in all aspects of school life.
Students achieve well at Ranzau School. We place strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, producing results consistently above the national norms. We also place high emphasis in developing inquiring learners who are responsible community members – children who are balanced, self managing, self disciplined, confident, caring, inquiring and who display a love of learning. We have strong student leadership opportunities. Our students care for each other which is visible in our highly successful buddy system and the pride they show in their school.
Ranzau children excel in Sports and The Arts. We believe it is important to give children as many opportunities as we can to be active and creative and to participate in these disciplines. We currently have a kapa haka group and the community always looks forward to the biannual school production. Ranzau is always well represented at interschool sporting fixtures.
Our facilities are well maintained and resource development is always ongoing and aims to ensure the enhancement of our learning environment. We have upgraded all our classrooms into wonderful modern learning spaces. These spaces enable us to deliver a broad and rich curriculum.
Ranzau School has a long history, being one of New Zealand’s oldest schools. Its origins are centred around an early German settlement in the 1840’s and the school has been in continuous existence ever since.

Due to the weather we will have no Walking Wednesday today.
Kia ora e te whanau,
With the overnight rain the main entrance to the Hope Church is again flooded. We encourage you to not use that entrance but rather the other entrance down by the flags and also cross there as we did at the start of the term.
Kia ora kotuou,
We have had a number of absences reported due to a gastrointestinal illness. We want to remind you, that your child MUST stay home 48 hours after the last time they vomited or had diarrhoea to reduce the spread and keep those vulnerable safe. Please continue to let us know of absences.
Health New Zealand has reported a spike in cases of vomiting and diarrhoea at the top of South Island, after recent flooding. The health agency said floodwater and silt could be contaminated with faeces, and agricultural or industrial waste, and often carried bugs that could cause gastrointestinal illnesses.
It encouraged anyone with symptoms of gastrointestinal illness - including diarrhoea or vomiting - following the floods to call Healthline or contact their general practitioner.
